Please, Please, Stop Eating Poop

Most dog owners will agree that eating poop is the most disgusting habit a dog can have. Unfortunately for us dog owners, dogs that like eating poop don’t find the habit so disgusting and don’t understand why their owners disgust with it.

Eating poop, coprophagia, is extremely common in dogs, leaving hundreds of thousands of dog owners wondering, “Why?” Veterinarians suspect that some dogs eat poop because of digestive problems, meaning that some dogs don’t completely digest their food. So for those dogs, poop is like a second round of dog food.

Though eating poop doesn’t really cause any health problems for your dog, it’s best to break your dog of this habit, if only to get rid of the “Ewww” factor.

One way to stop your dog from eating poop is to try adding some digestive enzymes to his food to help him digest his dog food better. You can get a prescription from your veterinarian Plus there are "stop eating poop" products at your local pet store.

A better and easier way to kick the poop eating problem is to feed your dog a high quality dog food. Some dogs seek out feces from cats and other dogs to get nutrients they are missing in their own diet. Feeding your dog a high quality dog food will help prevent your dog from seeking out nutrients in the yard.

Make sure you are feeding your dog enough. Some dogs eat poop simply because they are hungry or are bored. Try giving your dog a little extra food and giving her plenty of chew toys to keep her busy.

Clean up immediately after your dog. If your dog can’t get to it, he can’t eat it. If your dog thinks that his walks are trips to the buffet, walk your dog on a halter leash so that you can keep your dog away from other animals’ poop.

And finally keep your dog busy. Some dogs simply eat poop out of boredom or out of a habit they have developed. Hopefully your dog will be busy enough doing other things that he loses his love of poop.
