Keeping Your Dog Cool During The Dog Days of Summer

SpoilYourDog.com reminds dog owners “It’s very important to keep your dog cool during the summer heat.”

Venice, FL (PRWEB) July 17, 2006www.SpoilYourDog.com reminds dog owners “It’s very important to keep your dog cool during the summer heat.”  Dogs don’t sweat like us and can only withstand high temperatures for a short period of time.  Here’s a couple of things to keep in mind:

Never leave your dog alone in the car, even for a “quick-second”.   The temperature in your car can shoot up to over 100 degrees in just a few minutes.

Plus don’t plan on jogging or walking with your pet in the heat of the day.  Dogs are susceptible to overheating.  Dogs don’t sweat like us.  Their sweat glands, which are on their noses and the pads of their paws, are inadequate for cooling during hot days. Panting and drinking water helps cool your dog off.  But if your dog only has overheated air to breathe, dogs can suffer brain and organ damage after just 15 minutes of exposure.

If you and your dog are spending some time outdoors in the heat, make sure your dog has an immediate access to water as well as a shaded area.  Also be on the look out for heatstroke.  Heatstroke is a medical emergency. If you think your dog has heatstroke, act quickly and calmly.  Apply towels soaked in cool water to the hairless areas of your dog and get your dog to the veterinarian immediately.

Signs of Heatstroke

-Panting

-Anxious expression

-Refusal/Inability to obey commands

-Warm, dry skin

-High fever

-Rapid heartbeat

-Vomiting

-Collapse
