Guilt-Free Dog Treats

Guilt-Free Dog Treats

Ask most dogs and they’ll you that the quickest way to their hearts is through their stomach. Dogs love getting dog treats and dog owners love giving dog treats. Dog treats are a great way to bond, train, or even gain a dog’s trust.

However with the growing rate of obesity in dogs (and their owners) dog owners are faced with the problem of “over-treating” their dogs. Enter low-calorie dog treats.

Low-calorie and natural dog treats are hot right now because they allow dog owners to reward their dogs without adding to their weight.

More and more dog owners are concerned with their beloved dogs’ nutrition. Dog owners are demanding all-natural and high quality dog treats. By-products and nitrates are no longer welcome on the ingredient list. Dog owners are more interested in healthy treats that are nutritious, not just filling.

Its estimated that 40-60% of dogs are overweight. Interestingly that figure mirrors the Center For Disease Control’s recent report on human obesity. Like in humans obesity in dogs presents health problems.

Canine obesity increases the risk of diabetes and increases anesthesia risks. Plus that added weight increases the pain and discomfort of canine arthritis and lameness.

But it really isn’t that difficult to prevent obesity in dogs. First of all make sure that you exercise your dog. Just like with us exercise burns calories and tones muscles, which burn more calories than untoned muscles.

The second thing is control your dog’s caloric intake. Once your dog is overweight, however a reduced calorie diet is a must. But that doesn’t mean dog treats have to end. Substitute nutritious and low-calorie treats for dog treats that offer no health benefits. And remember the phrase, “Everything in moderation.”
