Spoiling Your Dog - A Growing Trend
Spoiling Your Dog is a continuing trend in the United States. Pet owners in this country were estimated to spend $35.9 billion on their pets in 2005, up from $17 billion a decade ago, according to the American Pet Product Manufacturers Association Inc.
The APPMA's chief operating officer and managing director, Bob Vetere, said the increase is at least partly due to baby boomers experiencing the empty-nest syndrome and lavishing their affection and disposable income on their pets, and young professionals who are delaying having families and are instead spending money on their animal companions.
More and more companies traditionally know for human products are going to the dogs. Big name companies including like Lands' End, Burberry, Cartier, Sharper Image, Gucci, Paul Mitchell, Omaha Steaks, Origins, Old Navy and even Harley Davidson are now offering lines of pet products ranging from dog shampoo, pet attire, and name-brand toys to gourmet treats and food.
