Best Dog Owners

In case you were wondering, here's Hollywood's best and worst dog owners:

British soul sensation Joss Stone has been named the World's Best Dog Owner for 2005

NEW YORK, Dec. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The 18-year-old singer beat off competition from Charlize Theron, Ashley Olsen and Dancing with the Star's John O'Hurley to become the planet's most canine-friendly celebrity.

The online poll conducted by readers of The New York Dog Magazine and The Hollywood Dog Magazine voted Paris Hilton the World's Worst Dog Owner. Voters put the heiress in the doghouse for replacing her Chihuahua, Tinkerbell, for a ferret.

"Our readers felt Ms. Hilton's dog-parenting skills left a lot to be desired," said Leslie Padgett, editor of The New York and Hollywood Dog Magazines. "First she loses Tinkerbell, then she ditches her for a cuter dog, then replaces that dog with a ferret, then a Kinkajou monkey and then, I gather, a goat. Recently Tinkerbell was spotted back in Paris' arms. But how long will she be in favor this time?"

Joss Stone, who is the face of The Gap, volunteered for the North Shore Animal League (nsal.org) after seeing images of pets left stranded in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Wilma.

She also recorded a PSA seeking support for the homeless pets of the Gulf coast. She has one dog, a Poodle named Dusty Springfield, a gift from an ex-boyfriend.Added Padgett: "Joss is a huge advocate for shelter dogs and it's not just talk. This year, despite an incredibly hectic schedule, she went out of her way help the dogs of Katrina and Wilma."

Stone narrowly edged out Ashley Olsen, who adopted a mixed-breed from the Animal Haven Shelter (animalhavenshelter.org), in New York this year. Tori Spelling, a Pug owner, who despite her marriage break-up, "tirelessly campaigned" for the Much Love Animal Rescue (muchlove.org) in Los Angeles was placed third.

John O'Hurley was the only man to make the cut. The former Seinfeld star and host of the National Dog Show is devoted to his Maltese Terrier, Scoshi, and Betty, a mixed breed. "I am extraordinarily fortunate to have pets," he said. "It means I have abundance."

The poll was conducted over a three-month period among visitors to thenydog.com and thehollywooddog.com. For more details contact Deborah Allan at 212-226-3955, 646-418-0743, or deborah.allen@gatsbyinc.com.

Dogs Are Members of the Family

Here are the results of the 2005 Annual Survey by PEDIGREE(R):

VERNON, Calif., Dec. 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- For many people, the love they have for their four-legged friend is demonstrated by their care for his/her well being -- a very personal practice that some take to more of an extreme than others. Because of their love for dogs, PEDIGREE(R) Food for Dogs decided to get a glimpse of the secret life of dog owners by surveying them to find out just how they feel about their beloved canine companions and how their canines affect their lives. From meeting your mutt match to pet-play dates, the second annual PEDIGREE Survey dug up some "bone-a-fide" nuggets on all things dog.

And They Call It Puppy Love ...
Dogs are more than just man's best friend, as most dog lovers say that choosing the right dog is a lot like finding Mr. or Mrs. Right. In fact, 82 percent of dog owners claim it was love at first sight when they laid eyes on their pooch. Moreover, nearly 60 percent admit they are as picky when selecting a dog as they are when searching for their perfect mate, with personality, physical attributes and pedigree taking top honors as the crucial criteria against which to measure their match.
Pushing their love to the limit, if trapped on a desert island, nearly 60 percent of those surveyed would want to have their dog there too, far outranking significant others, parents, siblings and friends as companions of choice -- a good thing since 55 percent of owners think their pet exhibits jealousy if they direct their attention to someone else.
"PEDIGREE recognizes the unique relationship that owners have with their dogs and appreciates the variety of ways they choose to express their love for their canine companions, from buying them lavish gifts to allowing them to enjoy activities typically reserved for humans," said Rob Leibowitz, Marketing Director -- Dog Portfolio, Masterfoods USA, the makers of PEDIGREE Food for Dogs. "As a brand that loves dogs, we conduct this annual survey to uncover the individual ways others celebrate their love and dedication to canines."

Make Room for Doggie
Move over dear, the dog needs more space. According to those surveyed, dogs are often the proverbial kings and queens of their castles, sharing many everyday experiences right by their owners' sides. In fact, 54 percent of those surveyed let their dogs sleep with them in their beds and 24 percent of dog owners said that they even allow their dogs to eat off of their plates.

All in the Family
One thing that's increasingly apparent: dogs are part of the family. Seventy percent of owners refer to themselves as their dog's "mommy" or "daddy," while more than 40 percent admit to having considered caring for their dog a dry-run for caring for a child. In addition, more than half of dog owners (62 percent) clearly feel that it is socially acceptable to feature their dog in family photos and/or holiday cards.

Doggie Dining
Food also plays a big role in the life of a dog. No longer seen as a basic need for survival, dog owners take what they dish to their dog very seriously. More than three-quarters of people surveyed (87 percent) consider food as a reward for good behavior (often in the form of an edible dog treat or snack). Unfortunately, nearly one third of dog owners (30 percent) say they give their dog table scraps/human food, which can contribute to canine obesity and lack the complete nutrition a dog needs for a healthy diet. Proper nutrition is critical for dogs, and it's important to choose a dog food that tastes delicious and contains all of the essential nutrients dogs need to thrive. PEDIGREE(R) Food for Dogs offers proper nutrition in a variety of flavors, which means even the most finicky dog will be wagging his tail with enjoyment when it's time for meals.

Yappy Hour
Social circles are as important to dogs as they are for people. Forty-five percent of dog owners claim their pooch has a regular group of playmates, while 52 percent of those coordinate play dates at least once a week. And if the sky was the limit for dog owners, Oprah Winfrey, Paris Hilton, Jessica Simpson and Brad Pitt top the list for dog-loving celebrities, who, along with their dogs, they'd love to meet for an afternoon play date.

Star Power
Nowadays, celebrities are often seen gracing the pages of magazines with their dogs in tow. From pocket-size pooches to two at a time, stars are a high-profile example of the joys of dog ownership. So does all that star power influence the way everyday dog owners treat their pets? More than 50 percent say no way -- at least not when it comes to dictating choice of breed -- and a whopping 85 percent claim the way celebrities care for their canines has absolutely no impact on the way they treat their own.

About PEDIGREE
PEDIGREE(R) is the number one brand of dog food in the world, offering a wide variety of products for different dog life stages. As an innovative market leader, PEDIGREE is at the forefront of pet nutrition and understands pet owner needs by providing a range of innovative products and resources.

Crystal Dog Collars

Hi All,

I came across this announcement from Bark & Sparkle the other day. Not quite diamonds, but these crystal dog collars sound awesome:

Bark & Sparkle announces a first in the world of canine couture -- a series of collectible, limited edition crystal dog collars.

December 6, 2005 -- No bones about it -- these dog collars are different.

Bark & Sparkle has begun a series of collectible, limited edition crystal dog collars.

Entirely handcrafted of Swarovski lead crystal and sterling silver, the newest addition to its line of canine neckwear is a glittering Limited Edition called “Christmas Trees.”

Conceived as the first in a collectible series, the dog collar comes with a Certificate of Authenticity and features three Christmas trees in a dazzling field of snow, each sporting festive red decorations and topped with bright yellow stars.

“I wanted to create something unique -- special pieces people could buy knowing they’d be among the select few to own them,” said Laurie Vien, owner of Bark & Sparkle. “Our Christmas collectible dog collar seemed like the natural first for the series.” She continues, “Everyone feels that their dog is the most special one in the world … so why shouldn't they wear equally special collars?”

Vien plans to release other holiday collectible dog collars in upcoming months, each one available for a limited time and accompanied by a signed and dated certificate verifying it as an authentic Bark & Sparkle creation.

About Bark & Sparkle
Bark & Sparkle operates on the premise that divas come in all shapes and sizes, and that like women who crave a fabulous pair of shoes, dogs appreciate a little glamour of their own. The company offers a full line of Swarovski crystal collars for dogs as well as matching necklaces and bracelets for their owners. Owner Laurie Vien makes her home in Vermont with her husband and their four dogs. Ten percent of all profits is donated to animal charities.

Lucky Dogs! Wealthy Americans are Spoiling Their Dogs More Than Ever

Lucky Dogs! Wealthy Americans are Spoiling Their Dogs More Than Ever, According to American Express Platinum Luxury Survey

NEW YORK. Wealthy Americans are spending lavishly on luxury goods for their dogs, according to the Second Annual American Express Platinum Luxury Survey. The survey, conducted this year with a random cross-section of 770 wealthy Americans, revealed that they spent an average of $12,831 on luxury dog products in the past year alone -- a large portion of their annual luxury spending.

"I am always on a search for the world's best luxury items for my dog, Lucky, and am so excited that high end luxury houses are creating so many fun items just for dogs," said Wendy Diamond, founder and editorial director of Animal Fair, the popular glossy monthly magazine for style-conscious animal lovers and their pampered pets. Diamond scoured the globe for a list of some of the most luxurious products available for these lucky dogs. Her fabulous finds include:

* Posh Pooch Python Pet Carrier ($3,950)
* Louis Vuitton Monogram Dog Carrier ($1,400 & $1,540)
